Samsung announces Exynos W920, world’s first 5nm chipset for wearables

Ahead of its Galaxy Unpacked event, where the company is widely expected to announce the new Galaxy Z Fold 3, the Galaxy Z Flip 3, and the Galaxy Buds 2, Samsung unveiled a new chipset for the “next-generation of wearables” today. Dubbed Exynos W920, the chipset is the world’s first 5nm smartwatch processor with an integrated LTE modem and a dedicated core to handle Always-on-Display (AOD).

Along with the highly-anticipated Galaxy Flip 3 and Galaxy Fold 3, Samsung is also expected to debut the Galaxy Watch 4 at the Unpacked event tomorrow. The smartwatch will likely boast a 7-day battery life and would be the first watch to run Samsung’s One UI Watch OS. To power the graphics-intensive UI, support long battery life, and stay LTE connected, Samsung has announced its new Exynos W920 chipset for wearables which will likely power its Galaxy Watch 4.

With the Exynos W920, future wearables will be able to run applications with visually appealing user interfaces and more responsive user experiences while keeping you connected on the go with fast LTE.

The chipset supports qHD (960×540) display, thanks to the two ARM Cortex A55 cores and the Mali G68 GPU. Samsung says the new CPU is 20% better in handling day-to-day tasks while the GPU brings 10x better graphics performance. Samsung says the Exynos W920 “enables faster application launches and more interactive eye-catching 3D graphical user interface” on a small display.

Along with the high-performance CPU cores, the W920 also features a dedicated “low-power display” Cortex-M55 core for handling Always-on-Display (AOD). Rather than relying on the main CPU for handling AOD, unlike previous smartwatches that resulted in not-so-good battery life, the Exynos W920 activates the M-55 core for reduced display power consumption.

Exynos W920 “comes in the smallest package currently available in the market for wearables.” Along with the smaller node manufacturing process, it has the power management IC, LPDDR4 RAM, and eMMC storage all soldered in one System-in-Package (SiP). Thanks to this feat of engineering, the chipset has an embedded 4G LTE Cat.4 modem and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) L1 right there in one package. Having one SiP with all the component saves space and enables Samsung, and other smartwatch makers who use this chipset, to use the space for a bigger battery or other smartwatch sensors, such as an integrated blood glucose monitor.

Samsung is widely expected to announce its new Galaxy Watch 4 tomorrow. With the company announcing the new Exynos W920 chipset just a day ahead of the smartwatch’s announcement, we can expect the Watch 4 to feature the new chipset. What it means for the end-user experience? We’ll get to know tomorrow.

Samsung shares its chip making plans, expects to roll out first 3nm chip by 2022

During its annual event, Choi Siyoung, president and general manager of Samsung Foundry Forum, spoke about the future of Samsung’s production of chips. Despite the global chip shortage, Si-young laid down Samsung’s roadmap for building 3nm and 2nm chips.

Even though boundaries are not able to produce chips due to the whole global chip shortage, Choi Siyoung said that Samsung “will increase overall production capacity and lead the most advanced technologies while taking silicon scaling a step further and continuing technological innovation by application. Amid further digitalization prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic, our customers and partners will discover the limitless potential of silicon implementation for delivering the right technology at the right time.”

To support his claims, Siyoung said that Samsung will start mass-producing chips on the 2nm node process in 2025. For context, current smartphone chips, which are based on ARM architecture, are based on a 5nm node process. Samsung’s next-gen Exynos 2200 is expected to be based on the 4nm process, as well as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 898.

Samsung plans to take this even further next year as the company expects to begin producing customers’ first 3 nm-based chips in the first half of 2022. These new chips are expected to boost the performance by 30% and use half as much power thanks to the 3nm gate-all-around (GAA) node. Moreover, the 3nm chips will take 35% less space than their 5nm counterpart, says Samsung. Samsung will produce the 3nm chip at its plant in Pyeongtaek, Korea – which is currently said to be expanding to support higher capacity.

Samsung says that along with “power, performance, and area (PPA) improvements, as its process maturity has increased, 3nm’s logic yield is approaching a similar level to the 4nm process, which is currently in mass production.”

Siyoung also detailed Samsung’s advancements in the MRAM field. He says that the company is making improvements in the 14nm process in order to support 3.3V high voltage or flash-type embedded MRAM (eMRAM) which will enable increased write speed and density.

Samsung’s new Exynos chipset with AMD GPU smokes its predecessors

Samsung and AMD have been working for quite a while in developing a new Exynos processor with AMD GPU, and it seems that their collaboration is starting to give excellent results. The first time we saw this SoC’s benchmarks was back in January, where it beat Apple’s A14 Bionic chip in leaked benchmarks. However, things have gotten better now that the latest tests show that this new chipset delivers more power than the current Samsung Galaxy S21 flagship.

It seems that the collaboration that started back in 2019 between Samsung and AMD turned out to be more exciting than expected. Recent rumors suggest that the new Samsung SoC’s with AMD graphics was originally scheduled to be released this month, but it could now be announced next month. Now, this information seems to be on track since we’ve recently seen the chipset’s benchmark scores over at 3D Mark charts.

The new Samsung and AMD chipset based on DRNA architecture managed to achieve an overall score of 8,134, which is 50 percent better than any variant of the Samsung Galaxy S21 series. The CPU mentioned in these tests comes with Cortex-A77 architecture, which means that the overall results of the final product will vary from what we have now. In comparison, the Exynos 2100 will use the Cortex-X1 Prime core, while the new Samsung Exynos processor will come equipped with the Cortex-X2 core, which is 16 percent faster.

Now, we may have to wait until 2022 to see this new chipset in action, as we’re not getting a Samsung Galaxy Note refresh this year. And the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip are expected to come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor under the hood. So, in other words, we may get to see this new Soc in the next Samsung Galaxy S22.

Samsung readying three Exynos chips, and one of them might outpace Apple

Samsung inked a deal with AMD back in June 2019 to license its RDNA graphics technology for its Exynos mobile chips, and it appears that fruits of that partnership will finally arrive this year. We’ve lately heard rumors of an upcoming Samsung laptop employing an Exynos chip with AMD GPU onboard, and a leaked benchmark promising some major performance gains. Now, as per a fresh leak, Samsung is prepping three new Exynos processors across different line-ups that will debut this year.

Leakster @UniverseIce mentions that Samsung will launch Exynos 8xx, Exynos 12xx, and Exynos 22xx series SoCs in 2021. The Exynos 8xx and Exynos 12xx chips will likely find their way inside mid-range Galaxy-A and Galaxy-M smartphones, while the unnamed Exynos 22xx series silicon will be a flagship offering that will likely be the first one with an AMD GPU.

Another leakster (@TheGalox_) claims that the processor will debut carrying the name Exynos 2200. And interestingly, Samsung is touted to launch two versions of this chip – one destined for flagship smartphones such as the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series, and another variant that will be fitted inside laptops, likely the always-on breed with cellular connectivity and Windows on ARM running things on the software side.

The tipster adds that the laptop version of Exynos 2200 will reportedly be 20% faster than its mobile counterpart, even adding that the first Samsung laptop powered by this Exynos chip with an AMD GPU will be announced by the end of this year. It is further being speculated that the laptop will be a successor to the Galaxy Book S that came equipped with a Qualcomm SoC.

As per leaked benchmarks, a device powered by an upcoming Exynos SoC with AMD GPU left Apple’s beastly A14 Bionic chipset far behind in terms of graphics prowess. And if that turns out to be true on the mobile platform, we can expect similar results on laptops too. That’s because the M1 silicon inside the new Macs is based on the same architecture as the A14 Bionic, which means the Exynos-AMD superiority could very well carry over in the laptop segment as well.
